A protest against the revision of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) Law and the Indonesian National Police Law outside the Indonesian House of Representatives complex (DPR/MPR/DPD) came to an end. The demonstration, which included firecrackers and water cannon dispersal, concluded around 6:31 PM local time.
The police started urging the protesters to disperse using crowd control vehicles and water cannon. Initially, the crowd resisted the dispersal, citing that they were breaking their fast. After sunset prayer, the police again requested the crowd to leave. Some protesters hesitated and even threw firecrackers towards the police, prompting the authorities to use water cannons to stop them.
Slowly, the demonstrators began to leave the DPR building and move towards the Jakarta Conventions Center (JCC) flyover, escorted by the police to ensure a peaceful dispersal. The demonstration was organized by a group calling themselves the Civil Society Coalition in rejection of the approval of the TNI Law amendment by the Indonesian Parliament.
Protesters displayed banners with various messages, such as “Return the Military to the Barracks,” and chanted slogans demanding the exclusion of the military from civil affairs. They also read emotionally-charged poems and delivered fiery speeches.
The Indonesian Parliament officially passed the amendment to the TNI Law during a plenary session attended by several ministers at the DPR building in Senayan, Central Jakarta. The session was chaired by the Speaker of the House, Puan Maharani, and attended by other officials, including the Minister of Defense, the TNI Commander, and the State Secretary Minister.
